HTC One fail – Nexus 5 ordered – update

HTC One fail - nexus 5 orderedHTC One fail – Nexus 5 ordered

Well, I did it – I finally made up my mind between keeping my HTC One (that I previously thought was the best Android phone on the planet) or purchasing a new Google Nexus 5! I have been puzzling over this for some time.

HTC One fail – Nexus 5 ordered!

My decision was made easier by failings of the HTC One as much as the brilliance of the Nexus 5.

Two things helped make up my mind:

  • The camera in my HTC One has developed the purple tint problem that many complain about and is supposed to be a software issue (but it isn’t, see below)
  • There is a very minor problem with the back of my HTC One in that it feels as though something is coming apart

I have taken quite a few videos with the HTC One today (we did Christmassy things indoors in low light conditions that apparently bring on the problem). I believe it’s a temperature related thing with the camera sensor as the purpling gets worse the longer I record. It does not happen on the front facing camera so I believe it is hardware related. Any software ‘fix’ can only be a kludge in my opinion.

In relation to the case problem there is an ever-so-slight lip that has recently developed between the large metal back case and the bottom plastic strip. It hasn’t visibly moved but it feels raised. I’m sure it makes no difference but it’s enough to taint my experience of the phone.

As I stopped using a dedicated camera about two years ago my phone has to be a capable shooter. With this purple tint issue the HTC One has failed. So I have ordered a Nexus 5 from the Google Play store. I ordered the white 32GB version because it’s in stock (as is the black 16GB model). I don’t think that the 16GB one has enough storage although you can get around that as I explained here in a previous post and I probably would have gone for the (safer) option of the black one had it been in stock.

I just wish I had made the decision a couple of days ago then I might have got it in time for Christmas to go with the Google Chromecast (thanks Santa, review coming soon!).

I’d like to know where the play store Nexus 5s are shipped from and whether you think I made the right decision.

EDIT: I really must congratulate Google on their despatch time. I placed the order through the Google play store late on Saturday evening. The order system said it would be despatched on 25th december (I presumed that was an automated response meaning 3 working days). so I didn’t expect it to arrive until late in the week. However, on Sunday morning I got an “order despatched” email with a tracking number!

Today (Monday) the phone was delivered. Well done Google ( and Parcel Force)!

It is sitting on my dining table at the moment – still packaged. I have the will power to wait until Christmas morning;-)
